The distinction between injection moulding and rapid prototyping

Release Date: 2025-12-25

The prototype is usually processed with plastic or metal on a CNC machine or 3D printed or vacuum cast, with several samples or small batches produced. The use of the mould refers to the processing of the mould first, and then using the mould to injection mould the batch production of products. Typically, a prototype is provided to the customer for approval, and following confirmation, the mold is used for mass production.

The prototype is a sample of the product. It should be noted that the final design may not be perfect and that its practical use may be limited. In the event of a defect in direct production, the entire product range will be wasted, resulting in significant losses of both human and material resources, as well as time. The prototype production cycle is brief, minimising the loss of manpower and material resources. It enables the identification of product design flaws and subsequent improvement, ensuring a sufficient foundation for mass production.

The mould is the metal model of each plastic and metal piece, which is created following the confirmation of the prototype. It is used to produce parts with the required shape and size precision.

It is a steel model, commonly used for machine tools. However, the requirements for cutlery are much higher than those for the prototype, and the processing cost is also much higher.

Commonly used items such as the shell of a TV set, a telephone or a plastic bucket are made by heating plastic and pouring it into the mould to cool and produce the mould.
